Do I need a policy?
If you employ a household worker, it is a good idea to take out a household worker policy to cover you for claims made by a household worker who might be injured while working for you.
A household worker is a worker you employ solely in and about, or in connection with, your own private dwelling or the grounds of the dwelling. (This does not include persons operating their own business.)
Independent contractors who have their own business, are not considered household workers. Independent contractors usually bring their own materials and equipment into your home to do the work. They are usually set up in a specific line of business (e.g. plumbing firms) and often employ their own workers. A household worker does not have their own business and usually provides labour only.
