What happens when the claim is being decided?
If a worker has lodged an application for compensation and requires immediate treatment for their injury before a decision is made, treatment can still continue but the worker may need to pay treatment costs up front (unless the provider agrees on another arrangement).
If the application for compensation is then accepted, the worker can send all original receipts (retaining copies for themselves) for the treatment costs directly associated with their work-related injury. WorkCover Queensland will then reimburse the worker for any reasonable costs in accordance with the table of costs.
Some treatment must be approved by WorkCover before the worker starts treatment - otherwise the costs may not be covered even if the application is accepted. If a doctor is planning complex treatment (such as private hospitalisation for surgery or complex rehabilitation programs), the worker or doctor should call us on 1300 362 128 to discuss. WorkCover Queensland can only cover the cost of treatment provided by a registered provider.
If a worker’s claim has not been accepted the worker will have to pay for any medical or rehabilitation costs themselves.
