This case study is about returning to work and how having a positive attitude can help after sustaining a serious injury.

Jaymes Redsell was in the prime of his life. He had just turned 30, was an experienced machinery operator, and a well-recognised employee. He had just started construction on his own home, with plans to move up the ranks at work, get his house paid off, and pursue his musical dream to perform as a drummer.

On 10 November 2007 Jaymes was involved in an industrial accident resulting in a serious leg injury. 'At the time of the accident, I thought I was going to die.' Following his injury, Jaymes' life changed significantly. Jaymes underwent a total of 15 surgeries, was in a wheelchair for four months, and was on and off crutches until January 2009. 'I realised that I would not be able to return to my job as a concrete pump operator, but I also had to watch my wife and friends finish my new home—something that I thought I would be doing myself.' He described this period as the worst of his life, 'I needed people around me who were supportive. Shay from WorkCover was one of those people.'

Customer advisor Shay Beyer worked with Jaymes, his employer, and medical practitioners to ensure he received medical treatment and rehabilitation to minimise the impact of the injury and help to get his life back on track. 'Shay respected me and was responsive to my queries. I was treated as an individual, and did not feel like just a number. She was honest and upfront. Nothing was ever a hassle for Shay.'

Jaymes had a positive approach to his injury and was determined to make the best of his situation. This positive approach, together with the support provided by Shay has seen Jaymes get his independence back. 'I'm driving and I have completed a Certificate III in graphic design. I plan to work a few days a week from home using my graphic design knowledge.'
