Following a serious workplace accident, Sam Fielder approached his rehabilitation and the return to work process with the right attitude, to achieve the ideal outcome.

This case study demonstrates:

  • How determination and enthusiasm can aid the rehabilitation process.

Sam Fielder was passionate about his role as a helicopter rescue crewman, working in the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsular Rescue Helicopter Service for almost two years. In collaboration with paramedics, helicopter rescue teams are responsible for retrieving injured persons in places not accessible by land.

On 9 October, 2009, a call was received alerting rescuers of a heart attack victim requiring aid on a container ship. As a part of the rescue, Sam and a paramedic were to be winched down to the ship, secure the patient on a rescue stretcher, and be winched back to the helicopter. During the rescue operation, however, the winch cable became caught and Sam sustained serious injuries as a result of high fall.

Following the accident, Sam’s lifestyle changed dramatically, particularly in the early days of recovery. Previously very physically active, during his recovery, Sam was no longer able to take part in the surfing, kayaking, lifesaving or riding that he enjoyed. He also faced the worrying prospect of not being able to return to the job that he loved, and relied on family and friends to keep him motivated.

After three months of recovery, Sam had the opportunity to recommence a fitness regime as a part of his rehabilitation process. With the use of an exercise bike and swimming, as well as the support of his physio, Sam worked hard to regain his strength, fitness and range of movement. After a further two months, and with the support of his colleagues and employer, he was given the opportunity to start light duties at work. In August 2010, Sam returned to full duties as a helicopter rescue crewman.

Sam was also nominated in the Q-COMP Return to Work Awards in the “Injured Worker Achiever” category. This category recognises workers’ determination to recover and return to work as quickly as possible following a workplace injury.
