Workplace personal injury insurance
If you work for yourself or aren’t covered by a workers’ compensation policy, we can help protect you from the cost of a work-related injury or illness. A Workplace Personal Injury Insurance policy can give you peace of mind if something goes wrong at work.
Insurance and premium
Support for when life gets tough
When life gets hard – whether with financial stress, health concerns or personal struggles – there’s help and support available.
What this insurance covers
This policy can support you if you're injured or become ill because of your work.
It can include:
- weekly benefits for lost wages
- reasonable medical and rehabilitation costs related to your injury
- hospital costs
- travel costs
- lump sum payment for permanent impairment
- death benefits.
What it doesn’t cover
This insurance doesn’t include:
- common law costs (because you’re insuring yourself)
- any injury or illness that happens when you’re not working.
Who can take out a policy?
Workplace personal injury insurance is optional and available to eligible people of any age or health status.
You can apply if you:
- aren’t covered as a worker under an Accident Insurance Policy, and
- receive pay or another benefit for working or supplying services.
You must also be one of the following:
- a contractor
- a self-employed person
- a company director
- a partner in a partnership
- a trustee of a trust.

Setting up your policy
You can apply and pay for your policy online.
You’ll need:
- your name and date of birth
- your contact details, including home address
- a brief description of your occupation
- your IBL (your total personal income from all sources of work for the whole year)
- MasterCard or Visa payment details.
If you prefer to pay monthly, we offer an interest-free payment plan at no extra cost. Call us to set this up.
Your premium cost
The minimum premium for workplace personal injury insurance is $1,650 per year, including GST and stamp duty.
If you apply mid-year, we’ll calculate your premium on a monthly pro-rata basis.
Managing and renewing your policy
We renew all policies in early June for the following year.
You’ll receive a renewal premium notice based on the insured benefit level (IBL) you gave us last year.
What to check at renewal
To help keep your cover accurate, check:
- your IBL
- your occupation.
Call us as soon as you receive your notice if either of these have changed.
Updating your IBL
Your renewal notice is your chance to update your IBL.
We can’t change it at any other time during the year.
Cancellation for non-payment of your premium
Your policy will be automatically cancelled if you:
- don’t pay your premium by the due date, or
- don’t meet your direct debit instalments.
Cancelling your policy mid-year
Call us if you need to cancel your policy during the year.
If you cancel partway through the year, we’ll work out your premium on a monthly pro-rata basis. This means you only pay for the part of the year your policy was active.
