What’s a specialist?
A specialist is a doctor who is an expert in a particular area of medicine.
They might be a surgeon (such as orthopaedic, hand, plastic or maxillofacial surgeon), psychiatrist or other expert, such as those who treat spinal injuries.
How a specialist can help
A specialist will use their experience to assess your condition, recommend treatment options and advise what activities you can safely do.
If you see a specialist, we’ll also use information from them when we put together your recovery or suitable duties plans.
Why you may see a specialist
Your doctor might send you for a specialist review to work out the best treatment for your injury.
Treatment could include being referred to a physiotherapist or, in more serious cases, surgery.
What to expect at your appointment
Your specialist will carry out any tests they believe are needed. These may include:
- scans, such as an MRI or CAT scans
- motion or movement tests to see how your body responds.
The test results will help the specialist understand your injury and decide on the best course of treatment.
Your specialist will talk with you about your treatment options, so you understand what they recommend and why.
