Getting treatment and starting your recovery
How to get treatment, start your recovery and understand the steps to get back to work after a work-related injury.
Recovery and return to work
Support for when life gets tough
When life gets hard – whether with financial stress, health concerns or personal struggles – there’s help and support available.
We support you from the start
Recovering from a work-related injury can feel overwhelming, but taking the right steps early can make a big difference.
We’re here to support you so you can focus on getting better and back to your usual routines.
What happens after we approve your claim
After we approve your claim, we’ll start planning your rehabilitation.
Rehabilitation helps you to get back to how things were before your injury.
Returning to your usual job as soon as it’s safe often has the best outcome for your recovery.
Getting back to work can also help reduce emotional and financial stress for you and your family.
When rehabilitation starts
You should start rehabilitation as soon as you’re able to, and make sure you follow your doctor’s advice.
This may include seeing a physiotherapist or, if needed, a specialist such as an orthopaedic surgeon.
Your doctor will help you understand what treatment you need.
If you need time off work
Your doctor will tell you if you need time off work. They’ll also record this in your work capacity certificate.
Many people don’t need time off or can return to work quite quickly with changes to duties, hours or days. We call this suitable duties.
Getting treatment can help your wellbeing
The longer you stay off work, the less likely you are to go back. Getting back to good work as soon as possible will support your physical and mental recovery.
Be open with your employer about:
- how you’re feeling
- the support or adjustments you need.
Talking through your options and setting clear goals can help you feel more confident and in control of your recovery.
Planning your return to work
We’ll work with you, your doctor and your employer to plan your return to work.
We’ll record this in a plan that sets out:
- your goals
- your path to recovery.
This is called your My Recovery Plan.
Your plan should be completed within 10 days after we approve your claim.
You can ask us for a copy of your plan at any time during your claim.
