Roles and responsibilities in your recovery

Your recovery is a team effort, and everyone has a role to play. We work with you, your employer and your treatment providers to help you return to work and normal life safely and confidently.

Support for when life gets tough

When life gets hard – whether with financial stress, health concerns or personal struggles – there’s help and support available.

Who’s involved in your recovery?

Your recovery will be supported by:

  • you
  • us (the insurer)
  • your recovery team at work, which could include:
    • your work supervisor
    • a Rehabilitation and Return to Work Coordinator
  • an Injury Management Coordinator (if needed)
  • your health providers
  • friends, family and community.

How working together helps you get better

When we work as a team, your recovery has the best chance of success. Everyone should:

  • understand their role so you get the right support at the right time
  • communicate openly so any challenges can be raised early and solved as a team.

Your role as a worker

You should be involved in planning your recovery and return to work from the start.

Taking ownership of your recovery can:

  • help you feel connected to your goals
  • make sure your treatment is right for you
  • support you to get back to your usual job.

Recovery planning

We’ll work with you to develop a plan that sets out your goals and your path to recovery. This is called your My Recovery Plan.

Find out more about the My Recovery Plan.

Your other responsibilities

You must take part in recommended medical treatment and recovery programs.

You should also be open and honest about your injury and how you’re feeling.

Being actively involved in your recovery helps you receive the support you need.

Visit our worker commitments page to learn more about what you need to do.

Your employer’s role

Your employer plays a key part in your recovery. They need to understand your injury so they can do what’s right for you.

What your employer must do

To support your recovery, your employer must:

  • stay in touch with you if you’re away from work
  • help you stay connected to your team
  • offer other suitable work if you can’t do your usual job
  • support you to get back to work safely
  • let us know if there’s a problem.

Your recovery team at work

Your recovery team at work may include:

  • your supervisor
  • a Rehabilitation and Return to Work Coordinator.
