Your rehabilitation

After your doctor treats you, they'll recommend next steps to help you recover. This could include referring you for allied health treatment or to a specialist. These next steps are tailored to what you need.

Support for when life gets tough

When life gets hard – whether with financial stress, health concerns or personal struggles – there’s help and support available.

Managing your care

Your treating doctor – normally your regular GP – should oversee your recovery.

They will:

If your doctor decides you need extra support at any stage, they’ll refer you to the provider who’s best suited to your injury and recovery needs.

Injuries your doctor can’t treat

If your doctor decides you need extra support at any stage, they may refer you to:

  • an allied health professional for treatment
  • a specialist for more detailed advice.

They’ll send you to the person best suited to support your recovery needs.

Seeing a specialist

When you’re referred to a specialist as part of your claim, we call this a specialist medical review.

This review can help to confirm:

  • if allied health treatment is the right next step
  • whether you might need more serious treatment, such as surgery.

Sometimes your rehabilitation may begin with allied health treatment, like physiotherapy, to see how well you respond before surgery is considered.

After the specialist understands what you need, they’ll refer you to the practitioner best suited to provide your ongoing treatment.

Allied health treatment

Allied health professionals play an important role in helping restore your health and function.

Their care is often a key part of helping you return to work and get back to everyday life.

Approved treatments and providers

We cover a wide range of medical and allied health treatments, from registered and non-board registered providers.

Information for providers

Treatments we don’t cover

Some services can support your health and wellbeing, but they aren’t covered under workers’ compensation.

If you choose to use a service that isn’t covered, you’ll need to pay for any costs yourself.
