Surgery
Sometimes a work-related injury is serious enough that you may need surgery to help you recover. Your doctor will send you to a specialist if they think surgery could help.
Recovery and return to work
Support for when life gets tough
When life gets hard – whether with financial stress, health concerns or personal struggles – there’s help and support available.
Understanding whether you need surgery
How you’ll know
If your doctor refers you to a surgeon or specialist, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll need surgery.
Your specialist will let you know if surgery is the best treatment for your injury.
Looking at other options
The specialist will only recommend surgery when it’s medically necessary.
They might suggest other treatments, like physiotherapy, that could support your recovery just as well.
Surgery is a big step and it can have risks.
Your specialist will talk you through all your options and answer any questions you may have.
Who will be involved
Your specialist’s role
If your specialist recommends surgery, they’ll guide the process and work with us where appropriate. They’ll manage your care from preparation through to recovery.
Our role
We know this can be an uncertain time and we’re here to help.
If you’re having trouble adjusting to life with your injury, please contact your claim manager. They’ll talk to you about how we can support you.
What may be covered
Surgery costs
We look at medical advice and whether the surgery will directly treat your work-related injury when deciding if we can cover it.
If your specialist recommends surgery as the best option for your recovery, they will send us a request for approval.
Other costs
To support your recovery, we may also cover other reasonable costs related to your surgery (such as medical items or travel costs).
